This year we have had a guided tour, in April, of Bridge Cottage in Uckfield, a Wealden Hall House dating from about 1436 .
In May, we had a guided tour of the beautiful Mayfield School Chapel, dating back to the 13th century, followed by a walk round the interesting village of Mayfield itself.
In June one of our group took us on a walk around two of Tunbridge Wells parks - the refined landscaped park of Calverley Grounds, part of the Decimus Burton development, and The Grove Park, just off the High Street, up Frog Lane, an area of woodland, placed in trust by the Earl of Buckingham.
In July we went to the Weald and Downland Living Museum in West Sussex, spending the day exploring what rural living was like, with over 1,000 years of history, in over 50 relocated historic houses covering the 40-acre site.
In August, some of us went to Bodiam Castle to find out more about the ‘Bodiam Dig’, a 3-year project to explore the buried archaeology of this iconic site. We went there last year to see that they were exploring the line of the Roman road, north of the castle and this year they were concentrating on the field south of River Rother, seeing the various courses this river has taken over time and discovering a lot of Roman building material, indicating a probable villa close by.
