Crowborough

Welcome to Crowborough u3a

What is a u3a?

u3a is for those people no longer in full-time employment. It gives you the opportunity to meet people, make new friends and continue learning and being active. If you’ve always wanted to learn a particular skill, or enjoy sharing your knowledge with others, u3a could be a good option for you.

u3a stands for the 'University of the Third Age' and is an international movement. Don't let the word 'university' put you off. The ethos is that people learn from and with each other, not for qualification but the joy of learning. The ‘third age’ refers to the time when we are no longer in full-time employment or have parental responsibilities. No qualifications are required and there are no age limits.

History and Scope.

Crowborough u3a was founded in 2006. Currently we have over 700 members with 80 enthusiastic interest and activity groups meeting monthly, fortnightly and some weekly, in the homes of members, or in hired venues. To see more details of what is on offer, go to the GROUPS page.

Meet us for a chat.

Come and meet other members at our Coffee and Chat session between 10:00 and 12:00 on the second and fourth Thursday morning of each month.

Regular general meetings.

We have a Monthly General Meeting on the third Thursday of the month with a special guest speaker, held in Crowborough Community Centre, Pine Grove, Crowborough, doors open at 2:00 p.m. for 2:30 p.m. The Membership Secretary is always present to welcome and enrol new members.

Organisation.

u3as are run by members, for members. A willingness to contribute in some way is important, such as by helping to organise an activity for your group, by providing refreshments or serving on our committee. Some groups meet in people's homes, others hire venues. When any additional costs are incurred these are shared between the group's members. Adminisration is provided by a committee, elected annually at an AGM, consisting of a chairman, vice chairman, treasurer, membership secretary, meetings secretary and additional members providing services for the groups and members.

This website and the Beacon computer administration system are administered nationally as services supported by the Third Age Trust, with local managers maintaining the content.

Crowborough u3a is a member of the East Sussex East u3as network and part of the South East u3a region of the The Third Age Trust. Follow the links to their websites.

Crowborough u3a, as part of the Third Age Trust, is registered with the Charity Commission, Number 1128386. If you have any questions please contact the appropriate member of the Committee through the email link on the CONTACT page.
