Delving Deeper is a discussion-based group which meets once each month in the group leader's house. Its format means that some limited preparation for each session is essential for group members to get the most out of our studies. Most group members have already explored England under the Tudors and Stuarts as well as some more recent British History. Our aim now is to put that knowledge into its European and wider world context.

Since March, we have been considering the changing nature of power: the bases of power and how they vary over time; factors that may make a powerful state; how power changes, and why. Our investigations are shaped by an outline programme and then the ideas put forward in discussion. It is a pleasure to hear the different elements of our theme explored in varied contexts, with group members bringing their particular interests and enthusiasms to bear as well as posing interesting questions. Our recent areas of investigations have been the Swedish Empire in the 17th century, from warrior nation to absolute monarchy; and the government and economy of the Dutch Republic in the 16th and 17th centuries.
