This recently formed group is looking for new members. It is a small, friendly group of calligraphy enthusiasts. We meet monthly on a Thursday afternoon, taking it in turns to host in our homes. Our meetings are engaging: we spend part of our time learning from each others' knowledge and the rest of the meeting in practical lettering, often experimenting with different styles and trying to adapt them. We do not have a tutor to lead us in practical calligraphy.

At the end of each meeting, we choose a topic to explore: this is the basis for the next meeting, for both discussion and practical work. The topics we can choose are many and varied: we have explored different styles of lettering and their historical usage; we have examined and attempted to design monograms; our next session will link lettering to music. We report back on what we have found, bringing examples to the meeting, and then try to build on that in the practical session.

We have to be careful in practical work: ink and carpet do not go together so, out of respect for group members’ homes, we only use pencil and pen.

Calligraphy can be expensive, but we keep materials to a minimum. A group member would need an italic pen, a pencil, a rubber, some ruled paper and a sheet of tracing paper to bring to the meeting.
