Our group was started in 2007 and was not designed to teach the language, but rather to appeal to those who already had some knowledge of French, and wished to have the opportunity to improve their general conversation.

In the beginning members were a little shy especially as it was a mixed ability group, but gradually as we began to get to know each other the atmosphere became more relaxed. Naturally we sometimes had difficulty in expressing ourselves, but with the friendly help of other members and a dictionary we began to make some progress,

Now many years later and with a much larger dictionary, we converse on a wide range of topics with sometimes hilarious results. We also enjoy lending each other our own French books and DVDs.

The French conversation group has now split into two. They are run on alternative weeks and have different levels of abilities.

Both groups are run on a similar pattern. The first hour is devoted to conversation in French about any topic coming to mind. The second hour, after coffee break, is more constructive and will centre on vocabulary practice, grammar revision etc, based on consistent weaknesses or mistakes picked up during the first hour.

The group 2 usually prefers to prepare their contribution to the conversation beforehand, so we loosely choose a subject such as food (which can cover anything from cookery, recipes, restaurants, meals etc etc), outings, TV programs etc. The list is not exhaustive.

Everybody participates at his/her level of ability; the only requirement is to have ‘a go’.

We have a lot of fun and laughter, as the atmosphere is very relaxed and everybody usually bonds very quickly.
