Our mission is to introduce items of historical significance with particular focus from the Georgian Period to the Modern Day, but from time to time exploring topics from the past millennia that enable a better understanding of Crowborough and its environs today.
We look at how the local hamlets such as Boar's Head; Chapel Green; Crowborough Warren; Hurtis Hill; Jarvis Brook; Palesgate; Southview; Steel Cross; Sweethaws, Whitehill and Withyham St. John’s each combined together to what we know as Crowborough and their interaction with nearby villages such as Rotherfield.
We also look at the many characters involved in building the town, the named movers and shakers but at the same time hopefully creating heroes of the ordinary folk whose story has not yet been told. We also look to challenge the reality behind many myths and stories based on hearsay.
The Team Leaders Mike, Reg and Stuart will provide Speakers monthly who specialise in aspects of local history in a broad sense across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, but in addition Members of the History Explorers Group will also share their research which focuses particularly on matters in and around the area.
New members are always welcome. If you would like to know more about the Group and its offering tap on the “Leader” contact link to send an email.
