This year we have had a three-course meal each session! This means in practice starting with a sonnet as our hors d‘oeuvre, with the main course consisting of a presentation by a member of the group of one of the lesser-known plays, and ending with a dessert, this being scenes from the ‘main course’ play on a DVD which we watch together after our short coffee/tea break. Selected scenes from the play under discussion are sent out and members allocated parts, and these we read during the course of the main presentation. The plays so far have been Henry VIII, Measure for Measure, Two Gentlemen of Verona, As You Like It (despite this being very well-known), as is The Winter’s Tale, then The Comedy of Errors and King John, these last three yet to come as I write.
At the end of the year we will be discussing where we go next in 2026, with members offering suggestions. One idea is to focus on a contentious claim regarding one of the plays, such as ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is anti-semitic, or ‘Othello’ is racist, and then argue for or against this, again with scenes that would support the argument. But members will be bringing along other suggestions. We meet every fourth Tuesday of the month in the sitting-room of a private house and there are currently 10 members.
